Louisville Adds Big Man Onuaku

Chinanu Onuaku, a 6-foot-10 center from Upper Marlboro (Md.) Riverdale Baptist, committed to Louisville Friday, choosing them over Miami and Georgetown.

The No. 65 player in the Class of 2014 according to Rivals, Onuaku gives Louisville a center similar to former big man Gorgui Dieng, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He could help out up front after the Cardinals lose Stephen Van Treese to graduation and potentially lose Chane Behanan and Montrezl Harrell to the NBA Draft.

“They envision using him as they used the Dieng kid,” Upper Marlboro coach Louis Wilson said.

Louisville is looking to add two bigs and remains in the mix for Indianapolis (IN) Arsenal Tech big Trey Lyles, who is down to Kentucky and Louisville, as well as several other big men.

On the perimeter, Sam Cassell Jr. of Chipola (FL) College is down to UConn and Louisville.

Onuaku, the younger brother of former Syracuse big man Arinze Onuaku, is Louisville’s third pledge in 2014, joining Seattle guard Shaqquan Aaron and Michigan power forward Jaylen Johnson.
