Jeff Newberry, a 6-foot-3 point guard out of New Mexico Junior College, is one of the most sought after JUCO guards in the nation.

An Atlanta native who turns 21 next month, Newberry will take an official to LSU Sept. 6-8 and is likely to visit Oklahoma State Oct. 17 for their Orange – White Game.

He also holds offers from West Virginia, Rhode Island and Hofstra, with interest from Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Creighton, Texas and Abilene Christian. Newberry expects to add more offers after an open workout Sept. 7.

Newberry spent a redshirt year at Ole Miss and then spent his freshman season at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. There he averaged 14.6 points last season and 26.7 in the second half of the season.

He will have two years at the D-1 level once he joins a program in 2014.

As for LSU, Newberry has a relationship with LSU assistant and former Atlanta AAU coach Korey McCray.

“A coach from the Atlanta area is on their staff,” he said. “And I started my collegiate career at Ole Miss. I may want to go back to the SEC and make a statement possibly.”

Oklahoma State is also an option.

“I’ve always admired their program,” he said. “I love their facilities and coaching staff. They get point guards to the league.

Wherever he goes, Newberry said: “I will bring a very flashy but humble skill set. I can do whatever a team needs from scoring to getting everyone involved.”
