Legendary Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has coached his last college basketball game after the Orange were eliminated from the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, falling to No. 8 seed Wake Forest 77-74.
It was not immediately clear whether Boeheim, 78, retired or was fired.
“I’ve been very lucky to coach this long,” Boheim told reporters postgame. “I think everyone missed my retirement speech last week. Nobody picked up on it.”
Boeheim has amassed a 1116-440 record over the 47 years he’s coached at Syracuse. He’s made the Final Four five times and has won one National Championship.
Boeheim was the oldest head coach in basketball, and many feared his time had come as the Orange have not eclipsed 20 wins since the 2018-2019 season.
Adrian “Red” Autry will be Boeheim’s successor. The former Syracuse guard has been an assistant under Boeheim since the 2011-2012 season, and was named associate head coach in 2017.
