Illinois lands Italian point guard Niccolò Moretti

By JACOB POLACHECK

Class of 2023 guard Niccolò Moretti has committed to Illinois, he tells ZAGSBLOG. Joe Tipton of On3Sports was first to report the news.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound point guard from the NBA Global Academy in Australia, chose Illinois over offers from UC Santa Barbara, USC, Radford, Bryant, Mount St. Mary’s and Northern Kentucky, among others.

“I decided to end up at Illinois because I think it is the best place for me to get better as a player and also because the Big 10 is a really competitive conference,” Moretti said by text. “I also think I can fit the right way in coach [Brad] Underwood’s style of play!”

Moretti was a standout at the 2022 NBA Academy Games in June.

“I would say I’m a team player,” Moretti said. “I’m not a guy that likes to shoot a lot. I’d rather find my teammates with a pass or make the right play at the right time on both ends of the floor.”

His older brother, Davide, spent three seasons at Texas Tech from 2017-20, averaging 9.1 points per game.
