Georgetown adds UConn transfer Akok Akok

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Akok Akok has become the latest player to transfer from one Big East school to another.

The 6-foot-9 junior forward is moving to Georgetown from UConn after averaging 3.4 points and 3.2 rebounds last season.

“I’m glad to have the opportunity to coach Akok Akok,” Hoyas coach Patrick Ewing said in a statement. “I’ve liked his game for a long time. The way he blocks shots, shoots the ball and can be an anchor on defense – that’s something I’m looking forward to seeing from him next season.”

Said Akok: “I chose Georgetown because it was a great fit and I trust the coaching staff. I’ve known Coach Ewing for a while, Coach [Kevin] Nickelberry has worked with some people I know. They are both talented coaches and this is a great opportunity. Georgetown is an excellent school with a lot of history. I’m ready to get to work.”

He visited Georgetown, Pitt and West Virginia.

“Georgetown a great fit for Akok for the following reasons; the opportunity for Akok to play significant minutes in the upcoming 2022-2023 season, as well as Akok’s desire to continue to play in the Big East,” said Vin Pastore of the Mass Rivals AAU program.

“The 6’9 athletic & mobile Akok Akok is an elite level shot maker and an elite level rim protector/shot-changer. These are two skills that you don’t often see in the same prospect. They make Akok unique and a huge addition for Georgetown.”

He joins inter-league transfers David Jones (who went to St. John’s from DePaul) and Corey Floyd Jr. (to Providence from UConn).

He is the fourth incoming Georgetown transfer along with guards Brandon Murray (LSU), Jay Heath (ASU) and Primo Spears (Duquesne).

Georgetown has seen six players transfer out since the season ended.
