Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim will team up this summer on the East Coast All-Stars team that will head to Spain but they won’t be playing for their Hall of Fame coach of a father.
Event organizer Guy Rancourt confirmed Wednesday that the Boeheims will play for new Memphis assistant and Hall of Famer Larry Brown on the Red team, while Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim will coach the White team. Rancourt is also bringing a third team — the Blue team will be coached by South Carolina’s Frank Martin with Iowa’s Fran McCaffery as an assistant– on the 3-game tour of Spain next month.
“I can’t wait, should be a great trip,” Buddy Boeheim said.
“Just having [Jimmy] in workouts, living with him in our apartment on campus has been just a dream come true for both of us. He’s so excited and I know this means as much to him as it means to me. It’s our lives so it’s great having him here.”
Players from Kansas (Dajuan Harris), Duke (Joey Baker) and Rutgers are also expected to dot the rosters of the three teams which will train at Manhattan College July 31-Aug. 1.
Jimmy Boheim transferred to Syracuse from Cornell ahead of this season and will join his brother Buddy, who made news when he became the first college athlete in the new Name, Image and Likeness era to sell gear with his name and also have it licensed with the trademark of the university.
Syracuse lost several players to transfer including guard Kadary Richmond (Seton Hall) and forwards Quincy Guerrier (Oregon) and Robert Braswell (Charlotte), while Marek Dolezaj opted not to use his extra year of eligibility and forward Alan Griffin declared for the NBA Draft.
Still, the Orange return Buddy Boeheim, guard Joe Girard III, and big men Jesse Edwards, Bourama Sidibe and John Bol Ajak. They add four-star small forward Benny Williams along with transfers Jimmy Boeheim, Cole Swider (Villanova) and Syracuse native Symir Torrence (Marquette).
