Dariq Whitehead, the 6-foot-5 wing from Montverde Academy (FL), picked up an offer from Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski on Wednesday.
The Newark, N.J. native will take an unoffcial visit to campus beginning Friday. He is ranked the No.3 small forward in his class, per 247Sports.com.
“It feels good,” Whitehead said by text of the Duke offer.
“That was a big offer for him and a school he really wanted an offer from,” said Team Durant director of recruiting Dwayne Wise. “He really looked forward to that particular offer.”
Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, and Memphis are also in pursuit.
Whitehead will keep his pro options in mind but has made it clear he wants to be recruited by colleges.
“I feel like you’ve got to be mentally and physically prepared for [the NBA],” Whitehead told ZAGSBLOG in June. “The pros, you’re playing with grown men. I feel like if you need that year of college, I don’t see why not just take that year of college? Get more prepared so that when you get there, you’re not struggling as much. So I’m definitely keeping my options open.”
He averaged 9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals last season at Montverde.
