Baylor adds Arizona transfer James Akinjo

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Baylor has landed a pledge from Arizona transfer James Akinjo.

The 6-foot-1 Oakland native averaged 15.6 points and 5.4 assists as a junior with the Wildcats. He will need an NCAA waiver to play immediately.

He spent his first season and a half at Georgetown, before transferring to start the Spring 2020 semester.

Arizona imposed a postseason ban last season in the wake of the 2017 FBI investigation into bribery in college basketball so Akinjo wouldn’t have been able to play in the NCAA Tournament. The school recently fired former coach Sean Miller and hired Tommy Lloyd as the new coach.

After winning the NCAA championship, Baylor will lose guards Davion Mitchell and Matthew Mayer to the NBA Draft. Jared Butler is also expected to declare, and MaCio Teague could also turn pro.

Baylor also brings in shooting guard Langston Love and small forwards Jeremy Sochan and Kendall Brown.
