Texas hires Chris Beard from Texas Tech as next head coach

By JACOB POLACHECK

The University of Texas is hiring Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard to the same position, per Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

“He’s gone,” a team source told ZAGSBLOG.

Beard, 48, spent the last five seasons at Texas Tech, leading the Red Raiders to a 112-55 record.

The Red Raiders appeared in three out of four NCAA Tournaments held during Beard’s tenure, including an NCAA National Championship appearance in 2019 in which Texas Tech ultimately finished as runner-up.

Beard’s contract buyout for schools in Texas and/or the Big 12 dropped from $5 million to $4 million after April 1.

The hiring gives Beard the chance to return to his alma mater, where he served as a graduate assistant from 1991-95.

Beard has had coaching stops as an assistant at Abilene Christian, North Texas, Incarnate Word and Texas Tech. He also served as head coach at Fort Scott Community College and at Seminole State Junior College.

After it was reported that Beard would be leaving the Red Raiders, Texas Tech junior guard Kyler Edwards announced his intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
