Michigan head coach Juwan Howard was ejected during the second half of Michigan’s 79-66 win over Maryland Friday as the Wolverines advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
With 10:44 remaining in the second half, Howard got in a heated exchange with the Maryland bench.
As a result, Howard received a double technical and was ejected from the game. Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon also received a technical.
“Turgs saw that I was out of the box,” Howard said postgame. “He’s telling the referee, look at my feet, I’m out of the box, and I’m like, ‘Come on, man. This is what we’re doing today? You’re worring about my feet being out of the box?’
“He said to me ‘Juwan, I’m not going to let you talk to me. You don’t talk to me ever again,’ and he charged at me.”
Assistant coach Phil Martelli filled in for Howard as Michigan outscored Maryland 22-19 in the final 10:44.
“There was friction in the first game, to be honest with you,” Martelli said postgame. “There was nothing in the second game. I don’t really know. I can’t say who was right or who was wrong.
“It’s March.”
Turgeon told reporters: “All I said is, don’t talk to me. Nothing about a banner. Never backed down. Just stood there and said, ‘Don’t talk to me.'”
