No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 3 Villanova both have the weekend off…so will they play on Super Bowl Sunday?
It’s not likely, but not out of the realm of possibility.
Wildcats coach Jay Wright said Bulldogs coach Mark Few called him about the possibility, and Wright said his first priority was to the Big East Conference. Several industry sources said if Villanova does play this weekend, it would likely be against a Big East opponent.
“Our priority has to be the Big East,” Wright said Tuesday on a Zoom call. “We would see what we could do with the Big East first. If we can’t get a Big East game, we’ll talk about it.”
Villanova (11-1, 6-0 Big East) plays at St. John’s on Wednesday but Sunday’s game with Xavier was postponed by COVID issues at Xavier.
Unbeaten Gonzaga (17-0, 8-0 WCC), meantime, had its games against Santa Clara Saturday and Feb. 11 postponed due to a COVID pause at that school.
