Arizona State continued to improve its roster going forward with the addition Saturday of Portland State transfer Holland Woods, a Phoenix native.
He also considered Gonzaga, New Mexico, Oregon State and a return to Portland State.
The 6-foot-1 Woods averaged 17.7 points and 5.2 assists last season for the Vikings. He will sit one year to play one, unless he’s granted a waiver.
“Seeing what (ASU coach) Bobby Hurley has done at ASU has been really impressive and I just think I fit in really well with his whole ‘Guard U’ style and it’s also an opportunity come home and play in front of my family,” he told 247Sports.com. “So there are a lot of things about it that just make sense.
“There were a lot of great things I accomplished at Portland State and everything was good there and I will always have great memories. This was just a chance for me to play on a little bigger stage and pursue some things I’ve always wanted to do. I kind of had my eye on ASU since I made the decision but it was up to them and then they reached out on the first day they could, which I really appreciated. Gonzaga was also recruiting me hard so that is never an easy thing to pass up but there were just too many good things about the ASU fit.”

Arizona State also remains hopeful of landing Class of 2020 Mayfair (CA) guard Josh Christopher, who will announce Monday between the Sun Devils, Michigan, Missouri and UCLA.
The Sun Devils are also the favorite for Ohio State transfer Luther Muhammad, who will announce Tuesday.
The Woods news occurs after Portland native Khalid Thomas announced his transfer to Portland State from Arizona State. He averaged 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds last season.
