Wichita State transfer Morris Udeze says three schools working hardest

By JACOB POLACHECK

Wichita State sophomore transfer Morris Udeze told ZAGSBLOG Saturday that Minnesota, Arizona State and Butler are the three schools that he’s heard from the most since he announced his intentions to transfer on Thursday.

He broke down each school’s pitch:

Minnesota: “They’re likely losing an NBA Draft pick in Daniel Oturu. [Richard Pitino] wants to have a center come in and play right away. That’s been their pitch.”

Arizona State: “They have Romello White, who is a similar player with a similar game to me. They’re losing him, so they’re thinking about having someone like me come in too.”

Butler: “They want me to come in, redshirt and then play. Most likely, I’m going to have to sit out with the NCAA rules.”

Udeze, the 6-foot-8 sophomore center from Texas, is one of seven Wichita State players to leave the program since the abrupt end to the 2019-20 season, joining Erik Stevenson, Jamarius Burton, Grant Sherfield, Noah Fernandes, DeAntoni Gordon, and Tate Busse.

Udeze broke down what it’s like to go through the transfer process during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

“I kind of feel like it’s better for the transfers because last year transferring would be quick,” he said. “You’d have to make a decision very fast, taking your visits and all that. This time around, it’s given transfers more time to think about their decision.”

In addition to the three schools mentioned above, Udeze has also heard from Texas A&M, South Carolina, Georgia State, Xavier, Illinois, Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Seton Hall, New Mexico State and Grand Canyon since announcing his intentions to transfer.

Udeze played in 28 games this past season, including five starts, with averages of 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in 10.5 minutes per game.

He averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 12.6 minutes per game as a freshman before a shoulder injury ended his season halfway through.
