UCLA redshirt freshman Shareef O’Neal announced his intentions to transfer on Wednesday, in a statement released via Twitter.
“After meeting with Shareef on Tuesday, he told me that he plans to transfer,” UCLA head coach Mick Cronin said Wednesday. “We fully support his decision and are wishing him all the best.”
After missing the entire 2018-19 season as a medical redshirt following heart surgery, O’Neal appeared poised to make a full comeback.
This season, O’Neal has played in 13 games, averaging 2.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.3 steals per game and 10.2 minutes per game.
The son of former NBA great, Shaquille O’Neal, Shareef had originally committed to Arizona out of high school but then switched to UCLA toward the end of his senior year.
