Niels Lane visits Texas, UConn up next

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Niels Lane, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound shooting guard from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic and Team Final, took his third official visit to Texas this past weekend.

Ranked the No. 14 shooting guard in 2020 by 247Sports.com, Lane is considering a final five of Florida, Miami, Texas, Providence and UConn.

Lane has now taken officials to Texas, Miami and Florida, and is set to visit UConn this coming weekend.

“The visit to Texas was really good,” Rod Lane, Niels’ father, said. “Niels has a lot to think about. No one has eliminated themselves during the visits, as each school has done a great job with him. He’s processing everything and listing his pros and cons. Tough choice, but I don’t think he can go wrong with any of them. It’s probably going to come down to his ‘gut feeling.'”

Texas head coach Shaka Smart met last week with both Lane and his mother. Florida coach Mike White was also at the open gym Tuesday evening.

“Niels is just scratching the surface of what he can be,” RC coach Dave Boff said. “He’s very skilled, can defend and plays with great energy. That’s a rare combination. Guys like that are special players.”.

Wherever he goes, Lane plans to be a “high-energy guy on both ends of the floor.”

“I take a lot of pride in my defense, I consider myself a lock-down defender,” he said. “I can also score the ball. I’m a good shooter. I still have room to improve on my jump shot, but I feel like my jump shot’s pretty good. And I think I can lead a team. I think I have pretty good leadership skills.”
