R.J. Davis talks Georgetown official, slew of schools in pursuit

By ADAM ZAGORIA

NEW YORK — Fresh off his official visit to Georgetown, R.J. Davis played Friday night at the New York City Catholic League Team Camp and drew a slew of high-major coaches to Archbishop Molloy High School.

Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel, Marquette’s Steve Wojciechowski and Dwayne Killings, UCLA’s Darren Savino, Georgetown’s Akbar Waheed and Indiana’s Bruiser Flint were among those on hand.

North Carolina’s Hubert Davis (Saturday) and Kansas’ Norm Roberts (Sunday) are both due this weekend, although neither school has offered.

The 6-foot Davis returned from his official to Georgetown — his first official visit — on Thursday.

“I really enjoyed it, nice campus,” he said. “I liked what they had to say. They were very genuine people, especially with the coaching staff and the players were very welcoming.

“They need a point guard in the Class of 2020, so they’re recruiting me hard. They definitely like the way I play and how I run the team. They’re just looking forward to seeing me more and becoming closer.”

Davis went out to dinner with several players, including Jagan Mosely, Jamorko Pickett and Jahvon Blair.

“I definitely connected with them and why those chose Georgetown and just about the culture of their school,” he said.

Davis has no other official visits planned but several schools are in the mix.

He broke down several of them.

Marquette: “They have four seniors leaving so they’re going to need a point guard just to run the show. They have Markus Howard, who’s an unbelievable player, is leaving so I’ll try to fill that spot.”

Indiana: “They’re trying to get me down to campus. They love my game as well as the other coaches recruiting me. They just love the way I run the show and play both sides.”

UCLA: “Coach [Mick] Cronin was recruiting me at Cincinnati, he just feels I can contribute to UCLA and get them back to a championship team.”

Pittsburgh: “The head coach, Jeff [Capel], recruits me and tells me that I have a dog mentality. He loves my game, the way I compete.”

North Carolina: “They’ve just been checking in on me, seeing when I’m going to play. They saw me down at NBA Camp. They’re just trying to build a relationship and they said they were coming this weekend.”

Kansas: “Coach Norm [Roberts] calls once in a while to check in and make sure I’m good, the the family’s good.”

Vanderbilt and Florida have also been keeping on contact.

Davis said he would feel “fortunate” if he picks up offers from either North Carolina or Kansas.

“It would be a good opportunity,” he said. “I’m still reviewing my options as far as recruiting.”

After this weekend, Davis is looking forward to Peach Jam with the NY Rens next month.

“I think we have a great chance of winning it,” he said.
