MINNEAPOLIS — Michigan State coach Tom Izzo all but ruled out Kyle Ahrens for Saturday’s national semifinal against Texas Tech, but left open the possiblity he could play Monday if the Spartans reach the NCAA championship game.
Izzo told ZAGSBLOG during Michigan State’s public practice there’s a “one in a thousand” chance that Ahrens plays Saturday. He left open the chance he could play Monday. Another MSU staff member said Ahrens “could shoot a free throw in an emergency.”
Earlier, Izzo told Jim Nantz that Ahrens wouldn’t play Saturday.
“He’s still gimping around and we’re not going to take any chances,” Izzo said.
Ahrens suffered a left foot injury with 4:34 left in the first half of the Big Ten tournament title game against Michigan. X-rays were negative.
He was out on the court doing drills on Friday and looked pretty good. The 6-foot-6 junior forward is averaging 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Kyle Ahrens (0) is out here doing drills. I wouldn’t be shocked if he played for Michigan State. Suffered a left foot injury 3/17. pic.twitter.com/6UUkuPEieG
