As Knicks tank for Zion, David Fizdale calls them a ‘glorified G League team’

By ADAM ZAGORIA

As the Knicks tank for Duke star Zion Williamson, head coach David Fizdale called them a “glorified G League team.”

The Knicks own the NBA’s worst record, three games below the Phoenix Suns, and have a 14 percent change at landing the 6-foot-7, 285-pound Williamson, as do Phoenix and Cleveland.

That means the Knicks have an 86 percent chance at not landing Zion, who on Saturday night was named MVP of the ACC Tournament after putting up 81 points in three games, including 21 points with 5 rebounds in the championship game against Florida State.

The Knicks have relied on a slew of young players this year, including Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, Allonzo Trier, Noah Vonleh, Henry Ellenson and more recently Kadeem Allen, who has been called up from the G League.

Owner Jim Dolan this week expressed confidence the Knicks will do well in free agency, where they have cap space for two max free agents and are targeting Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

As for possibly landing Zion in the May 14 Draft Lottery, he said on The Michael Kay Show, “What would be really helpful is if we got a ping pong ball to fall for us.”
