Arizona will host a multi-state recruiting event in June after California last month opted not to participate under the new guidelines established by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).
Nevada, Utah, Hawaii and New Mexico have agreed to participate and players from California are also invited, according to Matt King, who is hosting an event in Phoenix June 21-23. Information about the event can be found here.
“I am in charge of running the AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) sponsored live event through the Arizona Basketball coaches association,” King said via email. “The CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) has indicated that any California teams that are interested in attending will be allowed to participate.”
This is happening against a backdrop where many states, including California, New York, Texas, Maryland and Connecticut have opted not to hold events due to the discriminatory approach of the NFHS and other logistical issues. ZAGSBLOG first reported last month that New York and Texas were out.
In the wake of the FBI investigation into bribery in college basketball recruiting and the subsequent Rice Commission Report, the NFHS is taking over summer recruiting as part the NCAA’s initiatives to change the culture and climate in college basketball.
At this point, California, New York, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are all out, while states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio are weighing options.
