Day’Ron Sharpe, the 6-foot-9 power forward from The Winterville (NC) South Central, committed to North Carolina on Sunday evening during an unofficial visit, his father Derrick Sharpe confirmed to Inside Carolina.
“We weren’t expecting it, and it kind of came out of the blue,” said Derrick Sharpe about the commitment. “He told Coach [Roy] Williams and Coach was just really excited about it.”
According to 247Sports, Sharpe is ranked as the No. 71 overall player in the Class of 2020 and the No. 3 player from the state of North Carolina. He is the first commit in UNC’s 2020 class.
Sharpe chose UNC over early offers from Georgetown, NC State, UConn, and Virginia.
“Ever since I’ve known him, back when he was in the 7th grade, Carolina has been his favorite school,” South Central head coach Chris Cherry told Inside Carolina. “It was always ‘UNC, UNC.'”
Last season at South Central, Sharpe averaged 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds as a sophomore.
