Vernon Carey Jr. to host Kentucky, Duke

By ADAM ZAGORIA

Vernon Carey Jr., he 6-foot-10 junior big man from University School (FL), will host Duke and Kentucky this weekend, according to Evan Daniels of 247Sports.com.

Miami also met with Carey before the Final Four.

In January at the Hoophall Classic, Carey listed Duke, along with Michigan State, North Carolina, Miami and Kansas among his top schools

He broke down his top schools:

Michigan State: “Coach [Tom] Izzo loves me pretty much. He just really wants me, says I can be an impactful guy on their squad as soon as I come in.”

Duke: “They just want me to look at guys like Wendell [Carter Jr.] and Marvin [Bagley III] and just try to take something from their game and put it into mine. They said they need a big guy because all of them are  probably going to the draft after this year. They just want me to fill in that spot for Duke.”

He recently took an unofficial to Duke during the John Wall Holiday Invitational.

“I visited Duke at the John Wall Invitational in December,” he said. “It’s a pretty nice campus, kind of modern.”

UNC: “Coach [Steve] Robinson just emphasizes that he develops their guys at UNC.”

Miami: “They said I can create a legacy there since my dad [Vernon Carey Sr.] went there. [Coach] Jim Larranaga has known me since ninth grade.”

Kansas: “They just said I can be impactful. They told me to watch Silvio de Sousa since he just got there and said I can be an impactful guy.”

Carey Jr. is looking to decide sometime later this year.

“I’ll probably make a decision like August or September,” he said.
