Alan Griffin, the 6-foot-5 Class of 2018 shooting guard from White Plains (N.Y.) Archbishop Stepinac, only holds one high-major Division 1 offer at this point: from St. John’s.
The Red Storm coincidentally now have an available scholarship with the departure of guard Marcus LoVett.
But several other high-majors have been checking in on Griffin, the son of former Seton Hall star and NBA player Adrian Griffin.
Rutgers, Illinois, Xavier and Minnesota have all checked in on him, with Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell seeing Griffin twice in the last three weeks.
For the regular season, Griffin averaged 18.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.5 steals in 20 games, while shooting 48 percent from the field, 48 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent from the line.
“Alan is a versatile player,” said Stepinac coach Pat Massaroni, whose team opens the NY Diocesan Tournament on Sunday against Mount Saint Michael.
“He is a 6-5 wing who can score the ball. Known for his ability to shoot the three, he has improved being able to finish with both hands in transition and being able to score with his back to the basket on smaller guards. He has improved his on-ball defense and rebounds bigger then his size. His upside is his ability to score in bunches at the next level. He’s an athletic wing who can guard multiple positions. And he does more then score the ball. He has great potential for the next level.”
