Duke signee R.J. Barrett goes for 26 and 10 in season-opener, drops 33 in second game

Duke signee R.J. Barrett went for 26 points and 10 rebounds in his season-opener at Montverde (FL) Academy on Friday night, a 79-48 win over Trinity Episcopal (VA).

Georgia Tech-bound guard Mike Devoe added 21 points and 4 assists.

Barrett then went for 33 points and 4 assists in his second game Saturday, Montverde’s 103-55 victory over Westside Macon. Devoe chipped in with 25 points and 5 assists.

Earlier this month, Barrett signed with Duke over Kentucky and Oregon. He’s the projected No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, per ESPN.

Next month, Barrett and his Montverde teammates will head to China for a series of games. Read my New York Times story on it here.

Barrett’s performance came on the same night No. 1 Duke fended off Texas, 85-78 in overtime, in the PK80 semifinals thanks to Marvin Bagley III’s monster 34-point, 15-rebound performance.
