Montez Mathis, a senior at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, Md., signed his National Letter of Intent with Rutgers.
He is a consensus Top 100 recruit and four star player that will hit the hardwood for the Scarlet Knights as a true freshman in 2018-19.
“Montez Mathis is a very exciting addition to Rutgers Basketball,” said head coach Steve Pikiell. “I identified him very early in the process and he really embodies what we’re trying to do here. He’s relentless on the court. He’s unselfish and hard working. He’s a great young man from great family, coming to us from a terrific program. We’re very excited about his toughness, his rebounding and his ability to produce buckets. He’s a scorer that is going to do many tremendous things for us.”

Mathis is a consensus four star recruit and top 100 player who averaged 26.7 points and 8.9 rebounds-per-game under head coach John Zito as a junior in 2016-17 at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, Md
“Montez is a super tough kid,” Zito said. “He can really score the ball from all over the floor, from all three levels. He’s gotten much better over the last two years. He can really get to the basket, he can finish through contact, and he’s really good in the open floor. He’s a really good defender. His size and athleticism, along with his skill set allow him to do some things that a lot of guys can’t.
“He’s just a great, great kid,” Zito continued. “He’s a little more on the quiet side, but is a really funny kid. He gets along really well with all his teammates. He’s very respectful and just a pleasure to be around.”
Ron Harper Jr. and Shaq Carter, Rutgers’ two other Class of 2018 commits, signed earlier this week.
