Former Syracuse forward Taurean Thompson has enrolled at Seton Hall after withdrawing from Syracuse, according to a report from the Asbury Park Press.
He will have to sit out the 2017-18 season per NCAA transfer rules and would then suit up after Seton Hall loses its senior core of Angel Delgado, Ish Sanogo, Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez.
A Syracuse spokesman had no comment on whether Thompson had been given an official release, referring instead to a statement this week by head coach Jim Boeheim.
“We have been informed that Taurean is taking a leave of absence from Syracuse University,” Boeheim said in a statement to Syracuse.com. “My understanding is he wants to go to school closer to home due to some family health issues.”
Asked via text if Thompson was at Seton Hall, Boeheim told ZAGSBLOG, “No clue.”
Thompson, who attended Brewster Academy (N.H.) as a senior, committed to Syracuse over Michigan State and Seton Hall. He then signed financial aid papers.
The 6-9 Thompson averaged 9.2 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game in 17.9 minutes as a freshman.
Without his presence down low, Syracuse will rely on 7-2 Providence transfer Paschal Chukwu and 6-10 freshman Bourama Sidibe out of St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark.
