Denis Shapovalov’s dream run at U.S. Open continues with victory over No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

NEW YORK — Denis Shapovalov’s dream run at the U.S. Open continues.

The 18-year-old left-hander stunned No. 8 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(3) before an amped-up night crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the third round on Friday. Shapovalov will meet Britain’s Kyle Edmund, whom he beat at Queen’s Club this summer and also faced in a controversial Davis Cup match in February. Edmund beat American Steve Johnson, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(4).

“I’ve always dreamed of playing a night match on Arthur Ashe, it’s a dream come true for me,” Shapovalov said in his on-court interview. “Thanks for making my dream come true.”
