Devon Dotson talks Kansas visit, upcoming plans

Devon Dotson, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound point guard from Providence Day (NC) School and Team Charlotte (NC), took an official visit to Kansas this past weekend.

One of the highlights involved watching the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight at coach Bill Self’s house along with fellow 2018 recruit Silvio de Sousa and members of the Kansas basketball team.

“I went to his house Saturday night,” Dotson said. “It was great. We watched the fight. I was surprised that McGregor lasted that long.”

Kansas expects to lose several players in 2018, including point guard Devonte’ Graham and will have a need for Dotson, the No. 26-ranked player in the 2018 ESPN 100.

“Coach Self has made me a priority and he wants to put the ball in my hands,” Dotson said. “Just be in attack mode and run the show. He thinks I’m the top point guard in the nation, so he believes in me a lot.”

Dotson chatted with the 6-8 de Sousa, ESPN’s No. 28-ranked player who has transferred to Oak Ridge (FL) from IMG Academy.

“Yeah, he’s a great player and we were talking about teaming up,” Dotson said. “Just playing together, it would be fun to play with him.”

Dotson, who averaged 18.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game this summer on the AAU circuit, is now considering Kansas, Florida, UCLA, Maryland and Clemson among his top schools. He visited Arizona but ruled them out when they got a pledge earlier this month from 2018 point guard Jahvon Quinerly.

He visits Florida Sept. 8-10 but hasn’t set up any other visits, “but I might take some.”

As for what he likes about Florida, “Just their need for a point guard and the great relationship I have with the coaching staff. They’ve been talking to me since freshman year, and the relationships and the trust and the belief in me.”

UCLA has also recently gotten involved and is saying that freshman Jaylen Hands could follow Lonzo Ball on the one-and-done route.

“Coach [Steve] Alford, he thinks I’m one of the best guards in the nation and is looking at me to come in,” he said. “Jaylen Hands might leave so he’s going to need a point guard in the 2018 class.”

UCLA has produced a ton of point guards, including Ball and Russell Westbrook, the reigning NBA MVP.

“That definitely is appealing,” he said. “Coach Alford is trying to set up the dates for an in-home.”

Clemson is also in the mix.

“Maybe take an official, I gotta figure out the dates,” he said.

Dotson hopes to decide “before basketball season.”
