Timberwolves Trade Ricky Rubio to Jazz

By SEAN BOCK

A few moments after the Rajon Rondo news was announced, there was another notable NBA transaction that went through.

The Minnesota Timberwolves traded veteran point guard and former top-five pick Ricky Rubio to the Utah Jazz for a top-14 protected pick via the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

During his six years with the Wolves, Rubio has averaged 11.1 points and 9.1 assists per game.

After sending Kris Dunn to Chicago in the Jimmy Butler trade, the Timberwolves have Tyus Jones as the only point guard on their roster, meaning they will have to go fishing during free agency. Some big name point guards on the market are Kyle Lowry, George Hill, who Rubio will likely replace in Utah, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick Rose who, if he signs with Minnesota, will be reunited with Tom Thibodeau who coached Rose in Chicago from 2010-2016.

The departure of Rubio will allow the Timberwolves to have a little more breathing room regarding their salary cap, which will give them more leeway into landing one of those key free agents.
