R.J. Barrett, Kentucky Signee Shai Alexander Headline Canadian U19 Tryouts

Kentucky-bound guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Class of 2019 star R.J. Barrett are among the Canadian players who will attend the country’s U19 Men’s National Team tryouts from June 13-14 at the University of Toronto – Mississauga.

Iowa State-bound guard Lindell Wigginton and Oregon signee Abu Kigab are also in the mix.

Several top Canadians are not involved in the tryouts, including  Emmanuel Akot (Arizona), Nickeil Alexander (Virginia Tech), Ignas Brazdeikis, Oshae Brissett (Syracuse), Luguentz Dort and Simi Shittu, per Peter Yannopoulous.

“We look forward to a competitive tryout and training session as we look to field the best team to face the world in Egypt,” Canadian head coach Roy Rana said.

Following tryouts the squad will train in Mississauga until June 20th and then travel to France for exhibition play en route to Cairo, Egypt for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2017 from July 1-9.

The American team is coached by Kentucky coach John Calipari, who on Tuesday addressed security concerns in Egypt, which has suffered several terrorist attacks in recent months.

The group of 28 American tryouts includes three Kentucky players in Hamidou Diallo, Kevin Knox and P.J. Washington, as well as five rising high school seniors, four of whom hold Kentucky offers.

The 6-7 Barrett, who is being recruited by a Who’s Who of Division 1 programs, is considering reclassifying to 2018 from 2019.
