Before winning “La Decima” on Sunday against Stan Wawrinka in Paris, Rafael Nadal hadn’t won a Grand Slam tournament since capturing the French Open in 2014.
Nadal’s 10th Roland Garros title — via a 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 beatdown of Wawrinka — gave him his 15th Grand Slam crown, moving him one ahead of Pete Sampras (14) for second place all-time. The Spaniard also became the only person in the Open Era (which began in 1968) to win a major 10 times, passing Martina Navratilova, who used her serve-and-volley expertise to win nine Wimbledons.
Roger Federer, the man who leads the all-time men’s major title list, hadn’t won a Grand Slam event in five years until he took out Nadal in five sets at the Australian Open in January to win his 18th major title.
