Tremont Waters has signed with LSU after taking a recent visit.
“Tremont Waters is a dynamic point guard who will help our program immediately,” said new Coach Will Wade. “His ability to pass and score, along with his defensive tenacity, will help us tremendously as we move ahead toward the 2017-18 campaign.”
The 5-foot-11 Waters played in the Jordan Brand All-Star game, where he had eight points and two assists. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Connecticut in 2016-17.
He finished the season at Notre Dame (CT) High School averaging 25.3 points, 4.6 assists and 4.6 steals per game while shooting 87.3 percent from the line this past season, leading the Knights (22-2) to the first round of the Class LL state tournament.
“Multiple reasons,” Ed Waters told Scout.com of his son’s decision. “Lengthy conversations with the coach and looking into the SEC we have network where our wife and I can catch every game if we want to on our network.”
“Having a good contract was important and understanding a coach like Will Wade coming has to prove himself, just like Tremont does,” he added. “I like the fact that he’s hungry and has something to prove. The conversations have been amazing.”
Waters previously signed with Georgetown and then asked for his release in March before John Thompson III was fired and Patrick Ewing was hired.
“At the start of the season I saw Tweets on media about Coach Thompson being fired and there were rumors about it as the season started to go on and it just wasn’t looking good,” he said at the Jordan Classic in April. “The season didn’t go that well and more and more and more Tweets and stories started to come out about him being fired so I didn’t want to go into that situation. I wanted to go into a situation where I didn’t have to worry about my coach being fired, so I just asked for my release.”
Waters is the fourth four-star player to be signed by LSU, joining fall signees Galen Alexander of Lafayette Christian Academy and Brandon Rachal of Natchitoches-Central. In the spring, LSU has signed Waters and big man Mayan Kiir of Victory Rock Prep in Florida and JC combo guard Daryl Edwards of Northwest Florida State College of Niceville. The Tigers will also have graduate transfer Jeremy Combs, joining the team from North Texas.
LSU is now ranked No. 14 in the country in recruiting by Scout.com and No. 18 in the 247 Sports Composite team recruiting rankings for 2017-18.
