Dan Hurley doesn’t have to look far for a scouting report on Rhode Island’s next opponent.
His older brother Bobby Hurley is the Arizona State coach and knows Oregon all too well from coaching in the Pac-12.
“I’m going to lean on brother Bob for a little Pac-12 intel,” Dan said after the No. 11 Rams knocked off No. 6 Creighton, 84-72, in Sacramento on Friday night to set up Sunday’s showdown with the No. 3 Ducks. “They played them very well at Oregon and played them really well in the first half in particular in the Pac-12 tournament. Bob is here and now it becomes — it was type of a vacation-type trip for him, and now it becomes a working trip for Bob. I don’t know if he’s allowed to unofficially join our staff. Gotta check with compliance.”
The two brothers share a tight bond, as I wrote in this piece.
Bobby appeared last week on The 4 Quarters Podcast and said he wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the top three Pac-12 teams — Arizona, UCLA or Oregon — make a deep run. Now he has to help his younger brother stop Oregon’s progress.
Dan appeared on SportsCenter Saturday morning and was asked when Bobby was supposed to present his scouting report.
“We didn’t wait for compliance,” he said. “It was such a great moment to have him here in the building last night and obviously we had about an hour [to go over Oregon].”
Asked whose report he would trust the most between his father, Naismith Hall of Famer Bob Hurley, and his brother, Dan said: “I can’t answer that…I am relying on Bob for help in my next game. But my dad is an amazing resource for me to have a Hall of Fame father to grow up in the game. And then to have a brother who was the greatest point guard in the history of college basketball, I’ve had some pretty great basketball exposure.”
