SACRAMENTO –– The NCAA Tournament may take the cake for the premiere sporting event in March, but April could have something even better in store: an inter-family college basketball tournament featuring the biggest names in the game.
“I think we should do something when this is over, like a 3-on-3, get the old men involved,” Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley said here Thursday on the eve of his team’s game with Big East Tournament runner-up Creighton.
The Hurleys feature Dan and Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley, who is back in Sacramento, where he played for the NBA’s Kings, to support his younger brother. Who else can match up?
“The Alfords would be a great battle,” Hurley said of Steve and Bryce Alford of UCLA, the No. 3 seed in the South. “The Drews [Baylor coach Scott Drew and Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew] want a part of us, too.”
Maybe throw in Sean and Archie Miller, too?
Even though the Hurleys hail from Jersey City, N.J., Hurley has the tournament specifically planned so that his family receives home court in Rhode Island.
“It would be great for our state, great exposure,” he said.
