Rhode Island cruised into the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship game, giving coach Dan Hurley a chance to coach in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
The No. 4-seed Rams destroyed No. 9 Davidson, 84-60, in the first semifinal in Pittsburgh and will face the VCU-Richmond winner on Sunday’s title game.
E.C. Matthews paced the Rams with 19 points, Hassan Martin added 16 and Kuran Iverson 12.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi now has Rhode Island among his “Last Four In,” along with Syracuse, Wake Forest and Kansas State.
But the Rams (23-9, 13-5) can ensure themselves of a tournament invite by winning on Sunday.
“It was great, we haven’t been healthy the whole year, we got healthy late in the year,” Hurley told Allie LaForce of CBS Sports. “We’re on a great roll right now. Our guys are very confident, we’re locked in and playing at a high level.”
