Marquette Stuns No. 1 Villanova as Fans Storm Court

On the day the new Associated Press poll came out, both the No. 1 and 2 teams in the nation lost on Tuesday night.

Shortly after West Virginia beat No. 2 Kansas at home, Marquette stunned No. 1 Villanova, 74-72, sparking a court-storming.

After Katin Reinhardt hit two free throws to put the Golden Eagles up by 2 points, Villanova got one more chance with 10.4 seconds remaining.

A driving layup by Jalen Brunson (19 points, 4 assists) didn’t fall and the Wildcats couldn’t convert on the putback.

Marquette closed the game on a 19-4 run in the last 5:14. The Golden Eagles led the game for 22 seconds.

Reinhardt, the USC transfer, scored the final seven points of the game and finished with 19 points. He made 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, including one that tied the game at 70-all.

“I’m so blessed right now, man,” he told FS1. “It goes to show how hard I worked and how much my teammates trusted me, and the coaching staff. They just believed in me from day one since I came on campus.

“I couldn’t be more proud, man. I told them we were going to win today, my teammates. Everyone in there believed.”

Villanova dropped to 19-2, 7-2 Big East, while Marquette improved to 14-6, 5-3.

Marquette was coming off a win at No. 7 Creighton and has now won 4-of-5 in its bid to make the NCAA Tournament. This was their first win over Villanova since Jan. 28, 2012.

“This is not our championship, though,” Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said on FS1. “I want our fans to enjoy it, I want our players to enjoy it. But we’ve got a lot more work to do.”
