Syracuse Blown Out by St. John’s, Giving Orange 5th Loss in Last 8 Games

BY: MIKE McCURRY

Syracuse has officially hit rock bottom this season, with the final dagger coming in the form of an uncompetitive 93-60 home loss to St. John’s on Wednesday.

The Orange (7-5), who were a trendy dark horse Final Four pick in the preseason and began the year 4-0, have now lost five of their last eight games.

That includes three setbacks against former Big East rivals UConn, Georgetown, and now St. John’s.

It’s one thing when you lose to a South Carolina team with Sindarius Thornwell suited up, as well as a true road contest at Wisconsin, as Syracuse did in a four-day span back in November.

But on Wednesday, Syracuse was ran out of the Carrier Dome by a St. John’s team whose previous best win this year was against Binghamton. Just this past Sunday, the Red Storm got crushed by a mediocre Penn State squad.

Junior Bashir Ahmed’s career-high 20 points paced St. John’s, who has won three straight against Syracuse in the series.

Tyler Lydon played thru a strained Achilles and led Syracuse with 16 points, but the Orange committed 19 turnovers and shot just 33% from the field. Syracuse’s point guard tandem of Frank Howard and John Gillon combined to shoot 3 of 16.
