NEW YORK — John Calipari can always attract some high-profile guests to his games.
That was the case on Sunday afternoon when Yankees GM Brian Cashman (a Lexington, Ky., native), former Mets GM Omar Minaya and former Kentucky and St. John’s assistant Barry “Slice” Rohrssen all sat behind the Kentucky bench for the Wildcats game with Hofstra at Barclays Center.
Rohrssen, who left Kentucky for St. John’s only to part ways last summer with his old friend Chris Mullin, wore a Kentucky jacket.
St. John’s lost the first game of the doubleheader, 74-73, to LIU Brooklyn.
“Slice has been a dear friend of mine since we’ve both been in our early 20s,” Calipari said after Kentucky prevailed, 96-73. “And if I come to New York, he and I are going to get together.
“I would hope that that [St. John’s] situation would get rectified and they honor the contract. I don’t know all the particulars. I just know he’s a good man, he’s a good basketball coach, he’s a good recruiter, he’s great for our game.”
