NEW HAVEN –– Maryland signee Bruno Fernando looked impressive in his first game with IMG Academy at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College.
Displaying a diversified skillset, including several jumpers, a hook shot and a handful of rim-rattling dunks, the 6-foot-10 Fernando went for 20 points and 3 blocks as IMG Academy (FL) beat St. Thomas More (CT), 75-64.
“I think I’m a really good post player but since I got to IMG I’ve been playing more on the perimeter,” he said after the win. “I’ve been definitely working on my jumpers a lot. Since I got to IMG, my coach has been doing a great job letting me play outside the paint a little bit. I’ve been playing more outside than inside. I think I can get a lot more better at that. I just have to keep working on it.”

A native of Angola, Fernando initially committed to SMU in April 2016 before opening up his recruitment and doing a post-grad year at Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy.
He then committed to Maryland in October.
“I love the coaches, the coaching staff, I love the guys and my official visit was great,” he said. “It was just time for me to get along with the guys. I was looking for a spot that I can fit in right away and I think Maryland’s the best spot for me.”
As for what he’ll play at Maryland, he said “Coach [Mark] Turgeon sees me as a stretch four that can shoot jumpers. I can come outside and shoot a three-point shot and can handle the ball. And a great defensive player who talks to teammates.
“By the time I get to Maryland I’ll only be a freshman on the court, but I think I’ll be a senior like anyone else because of my abilities.”
