John Petty to Alabama

John Petty, the 6-foot-5 wing from Huntsville (AL) Mae Jemison, and The reigning Mr. Basketball in Alabama, committed to Alabama over Kentucky on Thursday.

Petty took an official to Alabama in August and then cancelled his official to Kentucky month.

He joins forward Alex Reese, wing Herb Jones, and Galin Smith in Avery Johnson’s 2017 class. Alabama also received a commitment from 5-star point guard Collin Sexton on Thursday, giving them a potent, high-scoring backcourt going forward.

“I was the first person [Johnson] talked to when he got the job,” Petty told Al.com. “That meant a lot to me.

“It’s going to be great. From my understanding, we’re going to have the No. 1 recruiting class. We’re ready to get in there and work.”

Petty averaged 19.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.8 steals while leading J.O. Johnson to a second consecutive 5A state championship in the program’s final year, per Al.com.
