NEW YORK — Andy Murray was the trendy pick of many tennis experts to win the US Open.
After all, the 29-year-old Scot won both Wimbledon and the Olympics — for a second time each — this summer, and he appeared to be on a roll coming into Flushing Meadows.
But No. 6 Kei Nishikori slowed No. 2 Murray’s roll with a five-set upset in the quarterfinals, 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, in a match that lasted 3 hours, 58 minutes.
There were five breaks in the fifth and final set, with the Japanese scoring the most significant one to go ahead 6-5. The 2014 runner-up then held his nerve and closed out Murray on his own serve.
Nishikori will meet the winner between No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and unseeded wildcard Juan Martin del Potro in Friday’s semifinals, with No. 1 Novak Djokovic to face No. 10 Gael Monfils in the other.
Trae Young‘s recruitment is about to heat up.
The 6-foot-2 point guard from Norman (OK) North and MoKan Elite will have in-home visits with Kansas (Friday) and Kentucky (Saturday), as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.
Coaches from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will also see Young Friday in an open gym.
Texas Tech and Washington will also come in to see Young, but not this weekend, his dad said.
Young, who won the Peach Jam with MoKan Elite and then captured a gold medal with the USA U18 team at the FIBA Americas Championship, broke down all six schools on his list for Rivals.com. He also said he plans to visit all six and may wait until the winter to decide.
Having already cut his list to 10 schools, Kevin Knox plans to trim his list to five or six “sometime this week,” he told SNY.tv on Wednesday.
“I’m focused on five or six that I really want to focus on, I’m going to narrow down to five or six probably next month,” the 6-foot-8 Class of 2017 small forward from Tampa (FL) Catholic and E1T1 told SNY.tv last month at Elite 24 practice.
Knox’s current list includes Duke, North Carolina, Miami, Alabama, Kansas, Kentucky, Villanova, Florida State and Arizona.
NEW YORK -- On the morning after
Kimani Lawrence, the 6-foot-7 small forward from Expressions Elite and New Hampton School, cut his list to five schools and set up officials.
Lawrence will visit Arizona State (Sept. 23), USC (Oct. 1), Pittsburgh (Oct. 8), Florida (Oct. 15) and Texas (Oct. 20).
“Kimani is a big wing with a high IQ who can score the ball in many ways,” said Todd Quarles, director of Expressions Elite. “He can shoot the 3 ball, is a tremendous slasher that plays above the rim and has a very good mid-range game. His ceiling is very high and that is why so many colleges were after him He’s a tremendous person who is a great student and very coachable and he wants to win.”
