Nick Weatherspoon, the 6-foot-2 four-star point guard out of Velma Jackson (MS), verbally committed to Mississippi State during his official visit on Sunday.
“It felt like home,” he said.

Ranked the No. 5 point guard in the Class of 2017 by 247Sports.com, he also considered N.C. State, Georgetown and Ohio State, among others.
“He had a good relationship with Coach [Ben] Howland and felt he had his best interests at heart,” Velma Jackson coach Anthony Carlyle said.
Weatherspoon averaged 22.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game at Velma.
“He will be a next-level point guard who can score and distribute,” Carlyle said. “The level of toughness he brings is similar to [Russell] Westbrook.”
Mississippi State is where Nick’s brother Quinndary Weatherspoon plays, so they have that going for them.
“It’s big because my brother and I have a real good chemistry on the court,” he said recently. “What we both can do especially on the fast break playing with my brother would be big but if that’s not the best situation for me I won’t be there but it’s very big.”
