Josh Carlton took an official visit to UConn this past weekend, and is now in the process of planning future trips.
“I got to meet the coaching staff, some of the players, see the campus, it was real fun,” the 6-foot-10, 235-pound Class of 2017 big man from DeMatha Catholic (Md.) and Team Loaded told SNY.tv.
UConn coach Kevin Ollie, who also hosted point guard Paul Scruggs, impressed upon Carlton the Huskies’ need for bigs.
“Just that they’re losing a lot of frontcourt guys,” he said. “Two of their best frontcourt guys are seniors [Amida Brimah and Kentan Facey] so it’s just a place where I can go and develop and become a real good player.”
UConn has also produced its share of NBA big men, which is appealing.
“Oh, yes, definitely, that’s definitely something I will take into consideration, that they send guys to the NBA” Carlton said. ”
Carlton also got the chance to hang out with Scruggs, who is considering Michigan State, Indiana and Xavier along with UConn.
“He’s a real cool dude, we hung out,” he said. “I got to meet his family.”
Carlton has no visits planned, but is also considering visiting Arizona State, USC, Xavier and Michigan State.
On Arizona State: “I really like Coach [Bobby] Hurley. From what I’ve seen they’re real hands on in developing players.”
On Michigan State: “Tom Izzo, from what I’ve seen watching Michigan State games he really loves his players and is really passionate about them and from what I’ve seen they love him back.”
On USC: “I don’t know too much about USC. I’ve been talking to their coaches for a little bit now.”
On Xavier: “Same thing, I’ve been talking to their coaches a little bit.”
Wherever he goes, he plans to be effective in the paint.
“I feel like I can score pretty well from the post,” he said. “I’m a big body, so of course I have to hit teh weight room but my body I don’t think it’s going to be too big of a problem for me at the next level. My face-up game is developing, it’s not where I want it to be, but it’s developing.”
Carlton plans to decide sometime in October.
“In October sometime, I haven’t pickedĀ date yet,” he said.
