Aundre Hyatt Talks St. John’s Visit, Recruiting

Aundre Hyatt took an unofficial visit to St. John’s on Wednesday, but the 6-foot-6, 205-pound sophomore small forward from White Plains (N.Y.) Archbishop Stepinac still has a long way to go in his recruitment.

“We grabbed a bite to eat and we saw the campus and then we watched the guys work out,” Hyatt said of his trip to Queens this week.

Asked what St. John’s coach Chris Mullin’s message for him was, “Keep doing what I’m doing, I’m on a good track.”

Hyatt, who plays with Class of 2017 St. John’s target Jordan Tucker at Stepinac and runs with the NY Lightning on the Nike EYBL circuit, now holds offers from St. John’s, Yale, South Florida, St. Louis, UMass, La Salle, Iona and Manhattan.

Stanford and Xavier also reached out to express interest.

“They’re all working hard,” Hyatt said.

With two more years of high school, Hyatt’s upside is high.

“I’m a good perimeter shooter,” he said. “I can block shots and I rebound well.”

Stepinac coach Pat Massaroni believes Hyatt’s ceiling is high.

“From the time we met Aundre last summer till now, he just continues to develop his game,” Massaroni said. “He can shoot the ball at a really high level and he showed that even at 6-6 he can play with some of the bigger guys, some guys that we played against that were 6-10, 6-11 that we had him guard.

“His upside is through the roof. He’s athletic, he can shoot the ball, he can finish. The biggest thing we’re working on right now is being able to score off the dribble….Continuing to work extra hard with his back to the basket, not just from 3 feet in, but from 8 feet in. And then one of the biggest things, he’s always willing to work. He’s there early, he stays extra. As a 15-year-old sophomore, he’s got potential through the roof.

“I think right now and in July, there’s going to be a lot more offers coming.”
