Iona lands junior college transfer Tyrell Williams

Tyrell Williams, a transfer from Western Nebraska Community College, has committed to Iona, he told SNY.tv.

Tyrell Williams, a transfer from Western Nebraska Community College, has committed to Iona, he told SNY.tv.

The 6-foot-9, 250-pound Williams chose Iona over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Stephen F. Austin, Memphis and UNLV, among others.

Williams said he is excited to join Iona and believes his game and style will only benefit the program.

“I love the coaches and the team,” Williams said to SNY.tv. “I love the style of play of the program and the history of the coaches and Iona over all. I believe my physicality to use my body will bring much success for the team and myself as well. My basketball I.Q is good but I know for a fact it will become better and even great under this coaching staff. My feel for the game is probably one of my best attributes as well.”

A big, physical post player, Williams is a good scorer in the post as well, as he averaged 12 points per game in 31 games last season with Western Nebraska.

Williams will have three years of eligibility at Iona.

He joins graduate transfer guards Jon Severe (Fordham) and Sam Cassell Jr. (UConn) among Iona’s offseason acquisitions.
