Reporter Asks Wisconsin Coach Greg Gard If He ‘Deserves’ To Be Back Next Year

PHILADELPHIA — Up until Thursday, the leader in the clubhouse for most outrageous question asked to a coach or player during this NCAA Tournament would have to be the guy from the Providence Journal who delivered the “How did Yale out-rebound Baylor” gem to Baylor’s Taurean Prince last week.

That condescending, tone-deaf question sure went over well.

Prince’s brilliant response was featured everywhere from ESPN to Slate.

But we might have a new winner now.

A reporter here asked Wisconsin coach Greg Gard if he “deserved” to be back next year. Keep in mind that Gard has his team in the Sweet 16 since taking over midseason for Bo Ryan.

Reporter: “Do you want to be back next year? Do you think you deserve to keep coaching this team after this year?”

Gard: “Did you know I signed a contract already?”

Reporter: “No.”

Gard: “Yeah, they actually gave me a five-year contract about three weeks ago. I always had a one-year contract.

“I thought: ‘Wow, I saw five years on that thing, where do I sign?’

“Interim tag — the best loss we had all year was the loss of the interim tag. That’s our best loss in the last three weeks.”

Brilliant.
