Marquette freshman big man Henry Ellenson won Big East Freshman of the Week honors for the sixth time on Monday and seems headed towards Big East Freshman of the Year honors.
Ellenson’s sixth Weekly honor is tied for the fourth-highest total in league history.
Xavier freshman guard Edmond Sumner ranks second this year with four Weekly honors. Jalen Brunson, the Preseason Rookie of the Year pick out of Villanova, has won the award once.
The 6-11 Ellenson averaged 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. With 26 points and 16 boards in a 96-91 double OT win against No. 20 Providence, Ellenson posted his league-leading 15th double-double. He ranks fourth in the Big East in scoring at 16.6 and first in rebounding at 10.1.
Ellenson could also become the first Big East one-and-done player since Pitt’s Steven Adams in 2013.
He’s currently projected as the No. 6 pick in the NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com behind only LSU’s Ben Simmons, Duke’s Brandon Ingram, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Dragan Bender, Providence’s Kris Dunn and Cal’s Jaylen Brown.
“Ellenson is Top 10,” one NBA scout said. “Scores inside and out, rebounds, young, big and improving.”
