NEW YORK — Derek Jeter isn’t trying to lead the Yankees to the postseason this September, so he spent part of Tuesday afternoon watching tennis instead.
The Captain sat in Caroline Wozniacki’s player’s box for the first set of her 6-2, 6-0 blowout of Jamie Loeb, the Ossining, N.Y., native and reigning NCAA champion from North Carolina. Jeter then moved to a suite for the second set (presumably to get some air conditioning.)
What’s the connection, you may ask.
Well, Wozniacki is now a senior editor for Jeter’s website, The Players’ Tribune, and she even gave the site a shoutout during her on-court interview.
“I think what Derek has done with the Players’ Tribune is really amazing,” said Wozniacki, a two-time finalist at the Open. “He’s put together a great team. As athletes sometimes we get misquoted and this gives us a chance to [avoid that]. There’s no misquotes because it’s us who write it.”
After her engagement to Rory McIlroy was called off, Wozniacki has since been romantically linked to NFL star J.J. Watt. The two sat together when Duke beat Wisconsin in the NCAA championship game in April.
Meantime, Loeb, who grew up a Yankees fan in Ossining, was awed at seeing Jeter on the big screen at her match.
“I would love to meet him,” Loeb said with a huge smile. “That was pretty awesome because I’m a Yankees fan and he’s one of the best baseball players ever so for him to be there, that means a lot.”
