NEW YORK — Maria Sharapova, the No. 3 player in the world and 2006 US Open champion, has pulled out of the event on the eve of the tournament because of a leg injury.
The 28-year-old Russian has not played since Wimbledon and posted on Facebook: “Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this years US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong.”
The five-time Grand Slam winner was due to play Australian Daria Gavrilova on Monday, and could have met tournament favorite Serena Williams in the semifinals.
In her statement, Sharapova said she is targeting a return in “a few weeks.”
She will be replaced in the draw by Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
