NEW YORK — Michael Porter Jr. was originally supposed to be in the Bahamas at the Nike event this weekend, but wound up in Brooklyn at the Under Armour Elite 24 Game instead.
“My passport didn’t go through in time,” Porter Jr. told SNY.tv on Friday. “It was on short notice and I didn’t have a passport so they tried to get one but it didn’t come in on time, so I just decided to come here.
“I’m really happy I made the decision to come.”
The 6-foot-8 2017 forward out of Columbia (MO) Father Tolton recently cut his list to 10 schools: Washington, Duke, Missouri, Stanford, Kentucky, UCLA, Syracuse, Indiana, Kansas and Virginia.
But he says five of those are working the hardest.
“Definitely Washington, Virginia, Mizzou, Duke and Kansas are probably working the hardest right now,” he said.
Porter’s younger brother, Jontay, recently committed to Washington, who are coached by Michael’s Godfather, Lorenzo Romar.
Washington also picked up a pledge Friday night from 2016 combo guard Markelle Fultz, giving a huge boost to Romar’s program.
As for Virginia, Porter Jr.’s close friend, Kyle Guy, is working on getting him to the ACC school.
Duke went three deep for Porter Jr. this summer at the Peach Jam.
Missou and Kansas are more local options for him.
Meantime, Porter Jr. continues to plan on packaging in college with his MoKan Elite point guard, Trae Young. The two discussed their package plans in depth at the Peach Jam.
“Yeah, yeah,” Porter Jr. said of the package, “Lord willing.”
