Myles PowellBy RYAN FISH

CHICAGO — For 2016 shooting guard prospect Myles Powell, playing at the Nike Global Challenge isn’t just about getting better as a player; it’s about showing everyone what he can do on the court.

“This is probably the biggest event that I’ve been to so far,” Powell told SNY.tv Saturday. “Coming down here was a great opportunity. I wanted to come down here and show why I should be down here. I was a little upset because I didn’t get invited to the Nike Academy, so I wanted to prove I was one of the top players out here.”

Powell proved just that on Saturday, dropping 30 points and shooting 6-of-9 from three-point range in his USA East squad’s 135-119 loss to USA Midwest in the Challenge’s third-place game. He was also named to the U.S. All-Tournament Team.

The 6-foot-1 Powell will transfer to South Kent (Conn.) from Trenton (N.J.) Catholic for his senior year in 2015-16, he confirmed to SNY.tv.

“I will be attending South Kent and I can’t wait to get there and keep proving why I’m one of the best guards in the country,” he said.

Thon MakerArizona State and Indiana appear to be the schools working hardest for 7-footer Thon Maker at the moment.

ASU head coach Bobby Hurley and two assistants — Levi Watkins and Brian Merritt — watched Maker Friday at the Under Armour event in Atlanta. Hurley flew to Atlanta after seeing Payton Pritchard and De’Ron Davis Thursday night in the adidas game at Rucker Park in New York.

Indiana also appears to be in hot pursuit of Maker, who recently announced he would be a member of the Class of 2016 and wouldn’t reclass

CHICAGO– The way top prospect Gary Trent Jr. is playing this week at the Nike Global Challenge, he should have no problem gaining the attention of any big-time program. Coaches aren’t the only ones interested in making Trent a member of their team, though.

The Minnesota native reiterated that he and fellow Class of 2017 prospect Wendell Carter Jr. have discussed becoming a package deal, committing to the same school with the goal of winning in March. The two previously told SNY.tv about the idea earlier this summer during USA Basketball U16 tryouts.

“It’s very serious,” Trent said Friday. “I knew of Wendell [before], but the opportunity that we had together at USA Basketball, we became closer together. We were just in the hot tub one day and we were talking. It was like, ‘hey man, we should go to college together… we could win the national championship.’

“We’re very serious about it. Hopefully in the long run we can start taking visits here or there together and see what school’s about, see what we like.”

CHICAGO – Wendell Carter Jr. may not be playing during his stay at the Nike Global Challenge, but that doesn’t mean the buzz surrounding his recruitment is slowing down.

The talented 2017 prospect from Atlanta continues to be linked to big-time programs like Duke and Kentucky as other schools look to jump in on his recruitment. Entering his junior year, the past few months have been a whirlwind for Carter, especially after he won the Peach Jam with the Georgia Stars and was named First-Team All-Peach Jam.

“I just try to weather the storm,” Carter said about coaches constantly reaching out to him. “I try not to answer every call, but if I got time I’ll answer.”

SUWANEE, Ga.- Billy Preston is the real deal.

The No.-9 ranked player in the Class of 2017 according to 247Sports.com, the 6-foot-9 Preston is one of the most versatile players in the nation.

Playing on the same team as other high level talent like Terrance Ferguson, Mark Vital and Skylar Mays on MWA Elite, Preston says that it’s been a good experience thusfar.

“It’s really competitive,” Preston told SNY.tv. “I didn’t know it was going to be this competitive, coming from the Adidas Circuit, but it was a new thing for me. I’m a competitive person though, so I like it.”

CHICAGO — If Class of 2016—and soon-to-be Class of 2015—forward Maverick Rowan is leaning toward a specific school that he’s heading to this fall, he certainly didn’t reveal as much at the Nike Global Challenge on Thursday.

The star prospect, who plans to reclass after he finishes taking classes later this summer, said there’s no frontrunner among the four schools that he’s considering. Rowan said last week that his decision would come down to Louisville, N.C. State, St. John’s and West Virginia.

“I’m still considering everything,” Rowan said after his USA South squad beat Pan Africa 91-70 Thursday afternoon.
